Systematized planning for large poultry consolidated farming

Poultry raisers have been confronted with urgent problems such as reducing costs and environmental control in Japan. The purpose of this study is to clarify the feasibility of the environmental control house-equipped and -automated in-line system, in the case of concentrated and satellite types. In order to do this, the U-egg cooperative was selected as an open house and the K-egg film (concentrated type) and the M-egg firm (satellite type) for the automated environmental control houses. The outlines of these firms are as follows; (i) in the U-egg cooperative, all egg houses are open house type; eggs are produced by the individual unit, while the supply of materials for egg production, egg grading and packing and marketing is conducted by the group unit. Egg production costs in the U-egg cooperative remain high and cause some environmental problems such as noise and displeasing smell. (ii) The K-egg firm can control the feeding environment, and egg gathering can be done by an in-line system which can save labor costs. (iii) In the M-egg firm, satellite-type egg production consists of three farms and shipments are made to a grading and packing (GP) center. As a result, the number of layers per worker and per unit area, the feed conversion ratio, and environmental contamination are more favorable with K- and M-egg firms than with the U-egg cooperative, but on the large poultry consolidated farm, both K- and M-firm automated environmental control houses need sophisticated control technology. It is concluded that the present U-egg cooperative has to be reconstructed along the lines of the K- and M-firms. Thus, egg production must involve a large-scale environmental control house equipped with an automatic system. Then, the costs will be reduced and some environmental problems such as unpleasant smell and noise will be reduced
