The effect of silicon on the growth of the different groups of rice [Oryza sativa] plants

The experiments were carried out to study the effect of Si on the growth of the different groups of rice plants: Nipponbare (Japonica), RP-9-3 (Indica) and Tiehu-ai-I (China group). These plants were grown in a solution cultured with 100 ppm SiO2 and without silicon in the medium respectively. The composition of the basal nutrient solution was the same as the Kimura B solution. The results were as follows: 1) The growth and yield of the silicon-free rice plant was markedly inferior to the silicon-supplied plant in all groups, respectively. 2) The pH of the culture solution was decreased remarkably by the silicon-free treatment after the active tillering stage for each of the groups. On the other hand, the phosphorus content of the tops of the silicon-free plant was remarkably high compared to that of the silicon-supplied plant
