Chemical control of weeds in orchard: Comparison of preemergence herbicides in activity and their practical application

The preemergence and postemergence activities of three commercial preemergence herbicides with the application in January and March in 1989 were observed in citrus orchard of Kagawa University. 1) The mixture of diuron with terbacil provided higher preemergence and postemergence activities on Stellaria media, Alopecurus aequalis, Setaria viridis, Acalypha austlaris and Digitaria adscendens than bromacil of diuron. This mixture had 90 days longevity on these weeds with the application both in January and March. It was confirmed that this mixture had potential for the control of winter weeds in citrus orchard because of its good safety on citrus and its good longevity by rainy season. Bromacil and diuron required postemergence herbicides for their practical application due to their low postemergence activities. 2) the mixture of diuron with terbacil percolated 175 mm into the orchard soil at 90 days after application. The leaching distances of bromacil and diuron in orchard were 175 and 130 mm, respectively
