Cercarial emergence from host snails exposed to different numbers of Fasciola miracidia

Many reports have been published on the development of Fasciola spp. in molluscan hosts, whereas few studies have been made on the dynamics of cercarial emergence from host snails. This study was conducted to make clear the development of Fasciola larvae and the cercarial emergence from host snails, Lymnaea ollula, which were exposed to different numbers of miracidia. The number of cercariae shed by snails was the greatest from days 20 to 50 after the first cercarial emergence, but it was not correlated with the number of miracidia inoculated. The duration between the inoculation of snails with miracidia and the start of cercarial emergence was delayed proportionally to the number of miracidia inoculated. The cercarial emergence pattern, the periodic cercarial outputs at a few day intervals, did not differ despite the number of miracidia inoculated.
