Influence of seed formation on the cracking at fruit apex in Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.)

Influence of seeds on cracking at the fruit apex was studied using 12 genotypes of Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) of pollination constant non-astringent type. Cracking at the fruit apex was minimal in seedless fruit either under open pollination conditions or when the pollination was prevented by covering the flowers with paraffin coated paper bags. This trend was remarkable for some types such as "Jirou" and "Okugosho", but was less pronounced in others. There was a positive correlation between the number of seeds in fruit and the severity of the cracking in some genotypes. Although in larger fruit, the occurrence of cracking was higher in some genotypes, the trend was not as general and pronounced as the effect of seed. Therefore, it is suggested that when cracking at the fruit apex occurs in selections from breeding stocks, seedless fruit should also be examined
