[Quinolones and fluoroquinolones in veterinary medicine]

Today, the quinolone antibacterials are the most prolific pharmacological group. They have an outstanding antibacterial potency which is directly proportional with their generation. That is, first generation quinolones were much weaker antibacterials behaviour of quinolones follows a chronological development as well: hence, in comparison with first and second generation quinolones, the third generation compounds have better tissue distribution and longer half-lives which make them useful against many bacterial diseases. They have few side effects, with the exception of juvenile carilage damage in the dog and horse paricularly. Fluoroquinolones form a promising family of new bactericidal antimicrobials, and this review attempts to narrow the gap between the busy clinician and the growing amount of literature on the subject, in such a way that he or she can choose among a varied quinolone group available in the market.
