Effect of genotype on the productivity of chickens in rice-based smallholder farming systems

Three genotypes, Native-White Leghorn cross, Native-New Hampshire cross and Native chickens were used in this study. The Native-White Leghorn cross showed poorest performance in egg production, mortality and utilization of feed resources. The major supplemental feed used by the farmers was rice grain which usually ran out of supply during the months of July and August. During this months cassava and corn were fed as supplementary feeds but these crops are produced mainly for human consumption and the amount available to the chickens was limited, especially corn during the month of August. Farmers mainly depend on crop production for their means of livelihood. Contribution of animal in the farm income was as small as 17 percent of total farm income. Chicken contributed much in providing meat on special occassions and cash income during emergencies. Chicken production has a big potential in improving the farm livelihood by providing more meat and cash the whole year. However to achieve this increasing yield of rice and other crops to feed chickens is a prerequisite
