Evaluation of Gliocladium spp. in the control of pineapple disease of sugarcane caused by Ceratocystis paradoxa (Dade) Moreau

Gliocladium deliquescens and G. fimbriatum exhibited the same antagonistic effects against Ceratocystis paradoxa in the dual culture test. Both antagonists inhibited the growth of the pathogen upon hyphal contact and continued to grow over the colony of the pathogen. Under the greenhouse, the sugarcane seedpieces were most effectively protected against the pineapple disease at 10 to the six and above spores per ml water of each antagonist applied 24 hr before the pathogen. Application of antagonists 24 hr before the pathogen generally gave higher percent germination, weight of roots and plant height and lower percent seedling mortality and percent rotted seedpieces than their simultaneous application or when the pathogen was applied ahead. Both antagonists and benomyl gave significantly higher percent seedpiece germination, plant height and lower percent rotted seedpieces compared with the application of the pathogen alone. Mixing each antagonist and the pathogen simultaneously in the soils or applying the antagonists in the soil and the pathogen on seedpieces gave less suppression of the disease compared with the application of the antagonists on seedpieces and the pathogen in the soil
