Reproductive toxicity effects of Curcuma longa Linn. extract to female albino rat

The reproductive toxicity effects of Curcuma longa on female albino rats were evaluated. The parameters evaluated were general reproductive performance, estrous cycle and fetal development. Various doses were prepared by using corn oil as the carrier material and was administered by stomach incubation in a constant volume of 10 ml/kg bw. It was observed that the crude extract caused significant decrease in number of surviving pupae. It also significantly decreased ovarian weights. Weights of the adrenal glands were found to be higher among treated animals. The test extract, however, exerted no major teratogenic effect on the offspring of treated pregnant dams and exerted no significant influence on estrous cycle. The test material exhibited some signs of being maternally toxic; this was manifested by wavy ribs and some fused sternal bones of pupa born from treated dams
