Leaf area and leaf area index estimation by dry weight method for cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

The study was conducted at the Cotton Research and Development Institute Experiment Station, San Juan, Ilocos Sur and at the Central Experiment Station, Batac, Ilocos Norte [Philippines] for Nov 1992 to Apr 1993. It established a dry weight method of estimating the cotton leaf area and leaf area index. Four Gossypium hirsutum varieties were used, namely: PSB-Ct 2, PSB Ct-4, Deltapine 16 and McNair 220. The leaf oven dry weight multiplied by the derived calibration factor (CF) values estimated the leaf area not different with that determined by the digital automatic area meter. Likewise, the estimated leaf area index did not significantly differ with the actual leaf area index (LAI) on a per variety basis at two sampling dates. These results lend strong support that the estimation procedure was reliable
