Effect of crude Kairomones and synomones on host-finding and parasitism by Trichogramma evanescens (Westwood)

Responses of Trichogramma evanescens (Westwood) females to crude kairomones derived from Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee) were most intense for the scale extract and less for the frass abdominal tip and eggwash extracts. Synomones from corn and cabbage elicited greater response and parasitization than those from tomato and tobacco both in the laboratory and greenhouse. Greenhouse and 2 laboratory trials (non-conditioned and preconditioned females) revealed the highest parasitization rate on Corcyra cephalonica eggs treated with moth scale extract and the lowest, on those treated with tobacco extract. Comparisons between the quadrants treated with different extracts and the untreated ones indicated that the responses of both non-conditioned and preconditioned T. evanescens females were significantly higher on quadrants treated with extracts of scale, frass, abdominal tip and corn than those on untreated quadrants. Parasitization, however, was higher on the untreated quadrants than on those treated with tobacco extract. Laboratory results showed no significant differences between the non-conditioned (not exposed to the Kairomones and synomones) and preconditioned (exposed to the Kairomones and synomones) T. evanescens females in terms of response to the different extracts. Application of both Ostrinia furnacalis scales and corn leaf extracts enhanced the rate of parasitization by Trichogramma evanescens both in laboratory and in the greenhouse
