Effect of pendimethalin and diuron on cotton: a re-evaluation

Pendimethalin did not inhibit cotton and seed germination but exhibited herbicidal damage particularly when the herbicides was sprayed earlier than 3 days after planting (DAP) during the wet season. When this was sprayed at three DAP and beyond, cotton seedlings recovered from the herbicide's phytotoxic effect. During dry season, Pendimethalin had no phytotoxic effect on cotton seedlings. Diuron did not also inhibit cotton seed germination but emerged seedlings in all treated plots grew abnormally, and died one month after planting (MAP) during wet season. On the other hand, Diuron sprayed just after planting cotton (JAP) and at 11 DAP did not significantly injure the cotton seedlings during the dry months. There were 40 to 82% seedlings mortality recorded in all other diuron treated plots. Pendimethalin may be sprayed in cotton fields while Diuron is not at all recommended. Both herbicides may be used during dry months as pre-emergence to cotton and weeds and these should be applied just after planting and irrigation
