Interspecies crossing of alfalfa

Tests on crossing 29 annual and perennial plant of alfalfa with the male-sterile species of Medicago sativa were carried out in 1986-90. About 6000 crossings were performed. It was not successful in positive crossing of 12 species and therefore only 17 species were taken into consideration in further tests. A high percent of plants remained sterille or the embryos withered, while most plants obtained from positive crossings were of a low biological value. The highest percent of formed seeds was obtained in case of MS x M. intertexta crossing
