[Formation of the transport system in two species of wheat in the vegetative period of development]

Special features of 14C assimilate transport were studied in plants of Triticum urartu Thum. ex Gandil and Triticum aestivum L. sharply differing in terms of productivity and protein content in the grain. In each morphogenetic phase of vegetative development the radioactive label was introduced into a completely expanded leaf, which served as the source of photoassimilates for growing sink organs (leaves and roots). Two types of the source leaf specialization in supplying growing leaves were found. In this connection the genotypes differed in terms of biological age, when formation of adventitious shoots is possible. In the original wheat T. urartu, the formation of adventitious shoots coincides with odd morphogenetic phases, while in the contemporary T. aestivum with even ones. Special features of the transport system organization in wheat plants of these species are related to the structure and the size of the caryopsis. At the initial stages of development this manifests itself in a special pattern of photoassimilate distribution between sinks, which later determines the relations between shoots and the root. In a high-protein T. urartu, the root plays a leading part in the regulation of transport at the whole plant level. Due to high sink activity of the root a cyclic change in the sink dominance occurs. In highly productive T. aestivum, during the whole vegetative stage the shoots (and first of all, the leading shoot) are of major importance.
