Microbial degradation of xylane

Xylans are the major hemicelluloses in plant cell walls. They are degraded in biodegradative processes by bacterial and fungal xylanolytic enzyme complexes, whose activities are important for the maintenance of carbon flow in the carbon cycle. Enzymes that hydrolyse the xylane backbone include endo-beta1,4-D-xylanases, beta-xylosidases and exoxylanases. Debranching xylanolytic enzymes are: alpha-Larabinofuranosidases, 4-O-methyl-alpha-D-glucuronidases, acetylxylan esterases, ferulic and p-coumaric acid esterases. Due to the complex nature of substrates the cooperation of these enzymes is needed for the complete degradation of xylans.
