Owing to the lack of genetic selection and proper management for decades, the swamp buffalo is still notorious for its poor oestrous symptoms. This phenomenon renders difficult for the promotion of artificial insemination (AI) in this species. However, for the purpose of introduction of this technique for the farmers in the villages, as well as improving embryo transplantation (ET) technology, oestrous synchronization will be one of the essential tools. Different hormones and hormone-like substances have been tested, e.g. progesterone, progestin and prostaglandin F2 alpha with variable results in terms of conception rates. These vary from non-pregnancy up to 81 % pregnancy, but the average is around 40 %. Several factors influence such performance and have to be considered; they are the condition of the animals, management practice and the quality of semen used.
