Preliminary assessment of boron deficiency in groundnut grown in Southern Thailand

Previous research suggests that boron deficiency is widespread in the north and northeast regions. The present study was conducted to investigate whether peanut grown in the southern region exhibited boron deficiency. With the cooperation of the provincial agricultural extension offices, 209 groundnut seed samples were collected from 10 provinces in Southern Thailand in 1988. The samples were examined for hollow heart symptoms. 22 % of the samples contained seeds with hollow heart symptoms. Percentages of seeds with the symptoms ranged from 0 to 8 %. The ranking of provinces from high to low prevalence of groundnut samples having hollow heart seeds was as follows: Trang (61 %), Krabi (34 %), Pattani (28 %), Yala (27 %), Narathiwat (25 %), Songkhla (18 %) and Phattalung (4 % ). Some soils of the south were boron deficient for groundnut production.
