Effects of urea-treated rice straw and/or feed supplement on voluntary feed intake and digestibility in draft buffaloes

Urea-treated rice straw and/or feed supplement in draft buffaloes which ploughed in paddy field and grass-field for 4 hr/d. 8 castrated males, about 7 years old, with initial weight of 563.3+-47.8 kg. were randomly alloted in a 2x4 factorial arrangement according to a replicated 4x4 latin square design. Period of the experiment was 160 days. The buffaloes were allowed to plow on sandy soil with soil density 193.3+-65.1 lbs/sq.inch. Voluntary dry matter intake (VDMI) and voluntary organic matter intake (VOMI) of urea-treated rice straw+fresh+supplement (kg/h/d, % body wt/d, gm/kg W /d) were higher than other treatment all working and at-rest (P0.01). Concentrate supplementation could increase rice straw and urea-treated rice straw intake by 13.0% and 2.0%, respectively. Digestion coefficients of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid-detergent fiber (ADF) of feed which received urea-treated rice straw were higher than those fed on rice straw (P0.01) and digestion coefficients of DM, OM and CP during working were higher than at rest period (P0.01). Digestion coefficient of nutrients was increased by concentrate supplementation, so that urea-treated rice straw and/or feed supplement could be increased voluntary feed intake and digestibility of nutrient in draft buffaloes which worked hard and received low quality roughage.
