Studies on responses of mangosteen Garcinia mangostana to water stress : I. Physiological responses of mangosteen to water deficit

To investigate the responses of mangosteen to water deficit, a field-trial and a pot-trial were carried out at Prince of Songkla University. The field trial is a comparative study between withheld watering and daily watering treatments in 4.5 year mangosteens during 14 days of the experimental period. The pot trial in a lathhouse, 18 plants (grown 1 plant per pot) of 2 year mangosteen seedlings were arranged in Completely Randomized Design with 3 treatments 6 replications during 40 days (1. watering every 3 days, 2. watering every 10 days and 3. watering once at 20 days after withholding water). It was found that the decrease of leaf water potential to maintain high relative water content (RWC) was only short period (about 3 days) as a rapid decrease of soil moisture under field condition. Consequently, both and RWC continually decreased, and stomata closed to reduce water loss through transpiration. These responses also occurred in the pot trial, and they depended on the degrees of water deficit.
