Insect pests of pigeon pea in Thailand

Twenty five species of insects were found in an investigation on the insect fauna of pigeon pea, Cajanus cajan Millsp., in Thailand. They consisted of a species of hairy caterpillar, Orgyia turbata Butler; three species of leaf folders, namely, Hedylepta indicata F., Hedylepta diemenalis Guenee, and Archips micaceana (Walker); two species of leaf eating weevils, Hypomeces squamosus F. and Xanthochelus faunus Olivier; a species of flea beetle, Luperus sp., bean fly, Ophiomyia phaseoli (Tryon); two species of bean lycaenids, Catochrysops strabo (F.) and Lampides bocticus (L.); pod borer, Maruca testulalis Geyer; corn earworm, Heliothis armigera (Hubner); pod fly, Melanagromyza sp.; bean bug, Riptortus linearis F.; two species of shield bugs. Brachyplatys subaeneus Westwood and Coptosoma erosum Montand; two species of tree hoppers, Leptocentrus taurus F. and Tricentrus sp.; leafhopper, Empoasca sp.; mealy bug, Coccidohystrix insolita (Green); scale insects; bean aphids; thrips; bean weevil, Callosobruchus chinensis L., and red spider mite, Tetranychus sp. In the present study the mealy bug, C. insolita, was considered as the most serious insect pest of pigeon pea.
