Suitable methods and containers for wheat seed storage

Study of suitable methods and containers for wheat seed storage was carried out in the warehouse and the seed technology laboratory at Phrae Rice Research Center from May to December 1986. Wheat seeds "Samoeng 2" from Samoeng Upland Rice and Temperate Cereals Experiment Station, Pang Ma Pha Upland Rice and Temporate Cereals Experiment Station and phrae Rice Research Center were used as 3 replications. The seeds were stored in 4 different types of containers: candy can, plastic box, cotton bag and jar. Three storage methods were used for each type of containers, i.e. covering the seeds with wood ash, mixing with wood ash and no seed treatment (control). Seed samples were taken monthly for seed quality testing. The seed mixing with wood ash had a higher germination percentage and germination index than untreated or covered seed. This method reduced a damage caused by stored insects but had no effect on seed moisture content, 1,000 seed weight, seedling growth rate and shoot and root growth rate. The seed stored in the candy can containers maintained good seed quality while those stored in cotton bags and jars had a reduction germination percentage and germination index after 4 months of storage. The moisture content of the seed in either candy can or plastic box remained at about 10-11 % after storing for 6 months. In contrast, the moisture content of those stored in the jar was increased almost double at the same observation.
