The International Cocoa Genebank, Trinidad (ICGT) at present consists of over 2,000 accessions, some of which had been in existence in Trinidad since the early 1930's when collecting expeditions to the centre of origin of cocoa commenced. ICGT is recognized by the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources as one of the two Base Cocoa Collections. The other is the collection at CATIE, Costa Rica, though this collection has a narrower genetic base than ICGT. New introductions are being made on an on-going basis from collections in South and Central America. Describes the research work carried out at the CRU on cocoa diseases, isozyme studies to generate the isozyme banding patterns of germplasm accessions, physiology and breeding/genetics.
