The relationship between the vitamin E/selenium status and the incidence of mastitis in dairy herds near Harare

In a study involving 10 dairy herds near Harare, blood samples were collected from at least 10 lactating cows in each herd. The activity of whole blood seleno-glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) and the concentration of vitamin E in plasma were determined and correlated with the incidence of clinical and subclinical mastitis in the preceding six months. The activity of GSHPx ranged from 7.895 to 53.71 U/ml red blood cells. Mean plasma vitamin E varied from 4.38 to 9.496 ug/ml. The incidence of clinical mastitis did not appear to be influnced by either the vitamin E or selenium status of the cows although there was a negative correlation between subclinical mastis indicated by directed microscopic cell counts, and plasma vitamin E
