Quantitative relationship between cellular pigments and nitrogen content of the Cyanobacterium calothrix D764 [Bangladesh]

Calothrix D764, a cyanobacterium isolated from a deepwater rice-field of Bangladesh synthesised chlorophyll (chl)-a, phycocyanin and allophycocyanin as light harvesting pigments in the laboratory but could not synthesise phycoerythrin. In batch culture, the cyanobacterium had higher chl-a and phycocyanin content at low light flux (25 mu mol photon m-1 s-1) compared to those in high light flux (85 mu mol photon m-1 s-1). The chl-a, phycocyanin and cellular nitrogen content decreased when subcultured to a fresh medium. These then increased to a maximum between 6-8 days and afterwards decreased again gradually up to 36 days of growth. Both chl-a and phycocyanin content were positively correlated with the cellular nitrogen (N) status of the cyanobacterium. Regression equations have been calculated to predict the cellular N content from the chl-a and phycocyanin contents in each light flux.
