In Phaseolus lunatus L., the results obtained by isozyme electrophoresis are complementary to those onserved previously by SDS-PAGE. Two gene pools had been identified on the basis on the seed storage protein analysis: a Mesoamerican gene pool and an Andean one. The geographic distribution of allozymes shows that the Andean pool is not only localized around Ecuador. Indeed, the GPI196 and MDH1140 alleles, commonly observed in the Andes, have also been identified in Mesoamerica. This wider distribution of genes reflects a large genetic diversity of this species but also demonstrates that the two gene pools are only partially isolated.
