This paper is devoted to the problem of choosing a suitable experimental design to use in investigations related to the nitrogenous manuring of cereal crops for which the response to mineral N-fertilizer depends not only on the total application rate but also on the relative proportions of the three fractions applied during defined growth stages. For this purpose, mixture experiments based on simplex-lattice design and including a large number of data points were used. Results clearly showed up the importance of exploring a factor space as large as possible specially in trials intended to find both the optimal total amount and the optimal distribution of this amount among the three individual fractions.
