The unitank approach for manure treatment

A full treatment of pig manure is here described. In a first step the manure is separated in a liquid fraction and a solid fraction. Experiments involved flotation and centrifugation steps. The liquid fraction containing most soluble compounds (BOD, nitrogen and orthophosphate) is treated in a UNITANK system. The systems studied removed most of the soluble compounds but some residual COD and phosphate remained present in the biological effluents. The effluents also retained a deep brown colour, which necessitated a post treatment. This included a precipitation step using calcium and iron salts. Simultaneously most of the colour was removed. It is proposed to mix the formed excess biological and chemical sludges with the raw manure. After a first separation step this will result in only one solid fraction. Several options are possible for this fraction: its utilisation on land, drying to a more commercial form or incineration. The choice will depend on the economic implications for each particular case and situation.
