The possibility of combining the production of piglets and pork was tested in a trial. Gradual slaughtering allowed to compare 122 first farrowing sows with 40 fattening pigs and 36 non pregnant gilts. Dry matter content of backfat of first farrowing sows was 2 to 3 % higher than in fattening pigs. Dry matter in all adipose tissues of non pregnant gilts was 2 to 6 % higher than in other animals. The influence of nutrition on backfat fatty acid composition should be higher than the differences between fattening pigs, non pregnant gilts and first farrowing sows. A negative correlation was found between reproductive performance and dry matter content in all adipose tissues of first farrowing sows. Oxidation potential of backfat was not correlated with reproductive performance
