Studies on the use of agroindustrial by-products in animal feeding. 7. The effect of increasing levels of apple pomace in the diet on the productive performance of early weaned lambs

In order to evaluate the productive performance of early weaned Merino lambs, fed with increasing levels of apple pomace, a research was carried out at La Rinconada Experimental Station, of the University of Chile. Forty males 72 days old, weaned from 18 to 22,5 kg liveweight, were randomly allotted among four treatments and fed for 37 days with diets which included increasing levels of apple pomace until they reached 34 kg liveweight. The basal diets consisted of alfalfa hay, corn, sunflower meal, fish meal, wheat bran, molasses and minerals. Apple pomace was included in four different levels (10, 20, 30 and 40%). Daily intake of each group was determined. Liveweight of animal was controlled every week. Average daily gain, feed conversion efficiency, weight and length of carcass, weight of perinephric fat and carcass rate of six lambs per treatment, were measured. Dry matter intake was similar among treatments. The lambs of T1, T2, T3 and T4 grew according to the equations: YT1 20.05 + 2.33X; YT2 = 19.34 + 2.87X; YT3 = 19.72 + 2.7X; YT4 19.23 + 2.67X, and gained 12.5; 14.33; 13.19 and 13.22 kg respectively during the experimental period (37 days). Average daily gains were 357, 409, 377 and 378 g/lamb for T1, T2, T3 and T4. Feed efficiency showed a tendency to improve as apple pomace inclusion increased over 10%, meanwhile carcass traits did not show significant changes. Nevertheless, the weight of perinephric fat tended to be higher with a 40% level of apple pomace. It is concluded that apple pomace may be included in lamb diets up to 40% without altering growth rate and carcass traits
