Studies of the use of agroindustrial by-products in animal feeding. 2. Productive performance of Hereford steers fed with diets that included increasing levels of apple pomace

In order to evaluate productive performance of steers fed with increasing levels of apple pomace, a research was carried out in the Beef Cattle Program at Rinconada Experimental Station of Maipu. Twenty four 300 kg live weight Hereford steers were randomly allotted into the following treatments: 10% (T1); 20% (T2); 30% (T3) and 40% (T4) of apple pomace to substitute a basic ration consisting of alfalfa hay, rapeseed oil meal and wheat straw. The treatment that included 20% of apple pomace showed significantly higher liveweight gains than T1, but did not demonstrate substantial differences with the other. The other controlled variables did not show significant differences. Daily gains and feed conversion were of medium level probably due to the protein deficiency of apple pomace. Carcass characteristics were similar among treatments, however a tendency to lower levels of fattening was observed as the level of apple pomace was increased. It is concluded that is feasible to include apple pomace up to 30% in steers diets without affecting productive performance and carcass features, but is necessary to add some nitrogen source, specially proteins
