Feed value and persistence of Galega orientalis Lam. on grassland

The trial was established on loamy sand, the humus content of which was 2.25 per cent, total-N 0.125 per cent, lactate extractable P 9.5 and K 13 m per cent, pHkcl 6.0. Grasses were sown at the end of July, 1978. The seeds of G. orientalis were sown additionally in the early spring of 1979. The annual background of fertilization was nil-N, P30 and K70 kg ha (-1). The different times of cuts were used as a trial treatments. The results showed that the establishing of G. orientalis is quite slow in the seeding year, while its importance to the total grass yield will increase usually starting at the 2nd harvest year. The most suitable regime of utilization for G.orientalis-rich stand was two cuttings during season: the 1st cut at the flowering and the 2nd one at the end of September. Three cuttings in every year have strong negative influence on the importance of G.orientalis in a stand especially during the first three harvest years. If the stand of G.orientalis has a good vitality the alternating cutting regime is also of expediency. The grass of G.orientalis-grasses stand has a good nutritive value for dairy cows: the crude protein content (16.6...19.2 per cent of dry matter) exceeded the required level (14 per cent), the content of crude fibre (25...26 per cent of dry matter) was acceptable. G.orientalis-rich grass was outstanding also for its high sum of essential amino acids in dry matter (mean content 65,5 g kg (-1)
