The content of nutrient elements in needles of a middle-aged Scotch pine stand

The paper gives a short account of the research into the chemical composition of needles of a 52-years old Scotch pine stand. The content of nutrient elements in needles was as follows: N-1.50, P-0.14, K-0.40, Ca-0.34 and the content of N,P and Ca depended neither on the location of the sample in the crown nor on the growth class of the tree. K content increases within the limits of the crown from top to down and in the stand from dominant trees towards overtopped ones. The results obtained cannot be generalized for all Scotch pine stands. N,P and K content decreases by the aging of needles, Ca content, on the contrary, increases. Studying the connection of N,P,K and Ca content in the top shoot of a tree with the size of the tree examined it became evident that only K content was in a reliable connection with the stem diameter and with the height of a tree. Of the connections between the elements only the connection between K and P content was reliable. The amount of nutrient elements contained in needles of trees cut out in the process of thinning the Scotch pine stands forms 1...4 of the supplies of this element in forest litter
