Dependence of the semen production of the Estonian red bulls on the heritable factors

The purpose of the present research was to evaluate the semen traits depending on the breed of bulls, to estimate the correlations between semen traits, to estimate the dependancy of the semen traits on the sire of the bulls, to evaluate the dependancy of the insemination results on the genotype of the bulls, to study the correlations between inseminations results and semen traits. For this research work data about the bulls of Estonian Red Cattle Breeding Centre since 1975 were used. The data of 109 bulls, who produced total 40125 ejaculates during 475 years were analyzed. The semen traits of the bulls except suitability for deepfreezing and annual semen production depend on the genotype. The bulls with blood of Brown Swiss, Danish Red and Angler breed had a semen productions better than average. The semen production of Estonian Red bulls was about average, the production of Finnish Ayersire bulls was below the average. Sperm concentration and motility and the number of doses per ejaculate decrease by intensive using of the bulls, but the annual production of semen increases. Ejaculates with bigger volume, higher sperm concentration and motility were more suitable for deepfreezing. The bulls with higher libido had worse semen. Sire has a significant effect on semen traits fo sons. Insemination results do not depend much on genotype of bull and semen traits
