Yersinia ruckeri in trout. First isolation in Greece
1991
Savvidis, K.G. (Veterinary Laboratory, Ioannina (Greece))
In March 1990, mortality was observed in a trout farm (50-100 fish daily, 80g of weight). The dark colour of epidermis, the numerous spotted hemorrhages in the mouth cavity and on the surface of liver as well, and the enteritis, mainly at the end of intestine, were the most common characteristics of the disease. Yersinia ruckeri, the etiologic agent of ERD (Enteric Red mouth Disease), was isolated from the liver and kidney of fish. The identification was based on cultural behavior of the microorganism and mainly on its biochemical reactions. It is well known that ERD appeared in America many years ago and during the last ten years the disease occurred many times in several European countries. In Greece, this is the first time of clinical diagnosis of ERD and isolation of Yersinia ruckeri. After the first occurrence the disease was observed in five other trout farms, which belong to the region of Ioannina but they are located at very long distances from each other. The combined application of antibiotics and sulfonamides had, in all cases, good results.
