The white ear disease of grasses grown for seed production

As a result of testing graminae /Poa pratensis and Festuca pratensis/ grown for seed production during 3 years /1990-1992/ in North-West Hungary, the white ear syndrome /fully or partially white ears/ is caused by biotic factors. The 3rd year's result proved the responsibility of members of the Miridae family for the disease, among which Amblytylus nasatus and Leptopterna dolobrata were dominant. An 1.0 l/ha dosage of Wofatox 50 EC applied in the first decade of May decreased the percentage of white ears to less than 10 %, whereas the control was infected to 92 % which practically meant total seed loss. Where the seed plants could develop undisturbed, the hay yield was considerably higher as well
