Studies on varietal diversity, cultivar-cropping type interaction, heritability, phenotypic and genotypic correlations and effects of inbreeding on characters related to fruit quality and yield were carried out to establish a reasonable breeding system of strawberry cultivars, especially those for the forcing culture in Japan. From those studies, the following guidelines of breeding of strawberry cultivar for the forcing culture are found: In the decision of the combination of cross parents, it should be evaluated such characters of sugar-acid ration, titratable acidity, average fruit weight, color, seed position, gloss, etc., because of these higher heritabilities. On the selection process, firstly, through individual and line selection tests, the characters on fruit quality are applied as selection index. And secondly, as the tests of preliminary performance and performance, it should be focused on the selection for all other characters including yield. Selection for forcing cultivars should be made under the forcing culture condition, but it can be also made under the semi-forcing or open field culture condition, if the weak selection pressure is applied only for the soluble solids content, pH and average fruit weight in the individual selection test. In the other case of cross breeding using inbred lines, the lines could be selected from the characters such as sugar-acid ratio, average fruit weight, fruit shape, petiole length and total number of fruits
