Effect of CO2 enrichment on the growth and soluble oxalate content of spinach [Spinacia oleracea]

Spinach was subjected to CO2 enriched atmosphere (700 and 1000 ppm) in a plastic box under forced ventilation and the effect of treatment on the growth and the contents of oxalate and sugars in the plants were examined. Fresh weight of the plants grown under CO2 enrichment rose 1.5-2.0 times higher than that of the control plants. Growing period was shortened in 5-10 days under CO2 enrichment to reach the harvesting stage. By CO2 enrichment, the content of water soluble oxalate of spinach decreased about 30% in spring, and about 20% in autumn crops. On the other hand, the content of free sugars in plants significantly increased with increase of CO2 concentration. From the above results, we suggest that the inhibition of photorespiration that is, CO2 enrichment may lower the rate of biosynthesis of oxalate via glycolate in spinach leaves, in addition, with a high rate of growth, oxalate concentration of plant tissues may decrease
