The effects of high rates and splitting annual application on nitrogen fertilizer (NPKS 25:5:5:5) on some soil chemical properties were studied at three depths in Kangaita tea soils (Mount Kenya). The soil pH declined significantly with increasing rates of fertilizer application by as much as 0.3 pH unit over the four year period. The extractable plant nutrients such as P and K generally decreased significantly with increasing rates of fertilizer applications, but splitting of applications had no significant effects on soil pH or extractable nutrients. The trends in Ca, Mg and Mn variation with increasing rates of nitrogen over time were not conclusive
