Efficiency of use of control genotypes for reducing yearly fluctuations of quantitative fruit characters in Japanese persimmon [Diospyros kaki] breeding

Three quantitative characters i.e. fruit ripening time (FRT), fruit weight (FW) and soluble solids content of fruit (SSC) in Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thunb.) were examined in 19 genotypes during a period of nine years and the variability of these traits was statistically analyzed. The repeatability between years were 0.85, 0.70 and 0.50 for FRT, FW and SSC, respectively. Removal of the yearly variation may increase the repeatability by 2 to 10%. To reduce the effect of yearly fluctuations, the value for a genotype in a year was adjusted by subtracting the mean yearly deviation of the performance in a group of control genotypes, each of which was evaluated every year, using 15 fruits on a single tree, from the value for the genotype in the year for the three characters. It was found that 35, 11 and 10 genotypes at minimum were required for reducing the yearly variability to a fifth of the original value for FRT, FW and SSC, respectively
