The breeding and characteristics of a buckwheat [Fagopyrum esculentum] cultivar, "Kitawasesoba"

A new buckwheat cultivar, "Kitawasesoba", was developed at the Hokkaido Natonal Agricultural Experiment Station, Sapporo, Japan. This cultivar was registered as "Buckwheat Norin No.1", released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and recommended by the Hokkaido prefectural government. "Kitawasesoba" was bred through from "Botansoba (Furano)", which was introduced from the Hokkaido Tokachi Agricultural Experiment Station. The characteristics of "Kitawasesoba" are summarized as follows: 1) Earlier maturity and higher yield than "Botansoba". 2) Shorter plant height and better uniformity than "Botansoba". 3) Same shattering traits as "Botansoba", "Kitawasesoba" is suited to Hokkaido
