The nature of somatic cells usually contained in cow's milk is described. The number of these cells in the milk of healthy cows, and the changes in their number are explained. Factors increasing the number of somatic cells in milk are discussed. The counting of somatic cells for the control of udder diseases to improve milk quality is pointed out. The measures to be taken for the reduction of somatic cells in cow's milk are recommended
