Due to the absence of lignite fuel, gas or coal resources in Latvia the use of some alternative fuels for internal combustion engines has been studied. The theoretical possibility to use some kinds of spirits or its mixture with kerosine in SI engines with changing its design has been considered. The use of the seed oil of some technical crops has also been discussed. The use of imported gas has been considered too expensive, but gas generated from chopped or cubed wood has been found the only possibe substitute for petrol or diesel oil in spite of its drawbacks
