Influence of Filipino culture on the role of women in corn farming communities

Data were gathered through formal and informal surveys from about 700 respondents in North and South Cotabato [Philippines] to determine the influence of Filipino culture on work and decision-making involvement of women in household and farm activities. Filipino culture stipulates the priveleges of women in terms of monetary control within the household and the type of work they do. Basically, Filipino women are purse holders and they exert influence on decisions regarding expenditures. In corn communities, roles women play are found consistent with culture. Women are actively involved in planting, fertilizer application, weeding, harvesting, hauling, shelling, drying, and selling while labor intensive jobs like land preparation, spraying and cultivation are done by men. Culture is not really rigid in delineating the role of men and women
