Microtubers for white potato production

In vitro derived microtubers would be useful for crop production if it offers advantage (in terms of cost, yield potential, ease of storage and transport) over rooted stem cuttings or seed tubers. Experiments on cost reduction of tuberlets produced by the MP-ZP tuberization protocol showed that steam sterilized-filtered tap water could replace distilled water during propagation and that space and culture medium were effectively utilized by the normal shoot population of 12 per culture vessel (250 ml flask). The cost of microtubers could be reduced by using half strength MS instead of full strength and replacement of the flask with 250 ml clear milk bottle. Based on greenhouse planting, microtubers of different sizes, in vitro derived plantlets, rooted stem cuttings derived from tissue cultures and tuber-derived tubers of clone 8302-185-10 varied significantly for mean number and weight of minitubers. Microtubers which were at least 10 mm in diameter performed similarly with tuber-derived marble-sized seed tubers
