Grafting as a technique for increasing salt tolerance in tomato

The possibility of increasing salt tolerance of susceptible tomato varieties by grafting them on resistant rootstocks was investigated in field trials in La Union and Mindoro Occidental [Philippines]. Highest marketable yields were observed in scions grafted in Marikit (resistant) stocks. Graft combinations of two susceptible cultivars had the least vigorous plants and lowest fruit set. In succeeding experiment, reciprocal grafting was done using three tomato cultivars with varying degrees of salt tolerance. Grafted materials were grown in salinized Hoagland's solution (150 mM NaCl) and ion concentrations of different plant parts were determined. Cl- was accumulated in higher amounts in most plant parts regardless of graft combination while Na+ was noticeably higher in the leaves of susceptible cultivars. Ca +2 and K+ decreased in most plant parts regardless of graft combinations
