Indigenous knowledge for controlling crop pests and diseases: its role in agricultural research in the eastern hills of Nepal

Nepalese hill farming systems are complex and extremely diverse. The adoption and use of new technologies by the majority of farmers in the hills of Nepal is limited by a number of factors including their small land holdings and little or no interaction with extensionist and researcher. Despite the call for the development of "sustainable" technologies many of the new technologies still rely on modern chemical pesticides. The sustainability of modern pesticides has already become a subject of great concern for many of the country's input suppliers, researchers and farmers. The potential for developing indigenous knowledge in the areas of crop protection in the Nepalese hills context with reference to socio-economic factors as technology determinants/dissemination, women farmer involvement, environment and economy are discussed. The development of a better understanding of the wealth of indigenous knowledge regarding crop protection techniques currently used by many of the farmers in the hills would enable the development of cost effect and sustainable methods of crop protection for hill farmers
