Farming systems and wood energy use analysis in Northern Thailand

Resource overuse is increasing in many countries including Thailand. Forest depletion in Northern Thailand resulting in reduction of wood energy supply is one of such. Since society depends on the biomass usage and its relation to fossil energy, the sustainability of its production and utilization plays a central role. If demands on biomass resources are not balanced, conflicting in its use and consequently environmental problems such as deforestation and loss of forest covers are likely to arise. This paper analyzes the farming and urban household systems, the energy subsystems and factors affecting energy consumption levels. Due to the difference in terms of accessibility and availability of energy types, energy producing and consuming systems are classified into urban, agricultural and forestry systems. Primary and secondary data are employed. The methodology is based on farming systems approach. This considers the decision making process at farm-household-family, village and regional levels. The paper intends to present the interaction of wood energy use among the above differentiated classes
