Labor use and labor productivity in an upland rice-based farming systems: a gender analysis

The study determined the acceptability of sustainable agricultural production technologies introduced in a selected upland site in Cavite [Philippines]. It assessed the current labor use and labor productivity of households cooperators using gender analysis. The study showed that labor use in all activities in upland areas was fairly substitutable between gender. Given the current cropping pattern, no slack labor was available all year round among male farm household. Based on physical measurements, female labor productivity in terms of actual cash measurements, as females could easily earn cash in off-farm and non-farm activities. On the other hand, male productivity was focused in on-farm work and significantly shared in household on domestic work, thus giving some female time to engage in cash income opportunities. In general, however, the total family income of upland farmers are way below the poverty level set for rural areas
