In Pakistan seed flow is quite complex between different crops and geographical areas. Produce from the summer hill crops in NWFP and Northern Areas is used as a seed source for the spring crop of Punjab and NWFP. The produce from spring crops is used as a seed source for the autumn crop in the Punjab. The autumn Punjab crop is a substantial source of informal seed, feeding the autumn crops in Sindh and NWFP and summer hill crops in NWFP, Northern Areas and Baluchistan. Both formal and informal seed potato systems exist in Pakistan. The bulk of the seed produced in the country is derived from informal seed sector. 97 to over 99% of the total seed requirements are met by the home grown seed potatoes and only 0.2 to 0.3 percent are met by certified seed (local and imported).
