Environmental factors limiting barley yield in the high plateaux of eastern Algeria [Hordeum vulgare]

Ten barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ssp. vulgare) lines of diverse origin were sown at three seeding dates in the 1988/89 season to identify the primary environmental factors that limit barley yields in the high plateaux of eastern Algeria. Data were collected on GY and yield components, days to heading, mean minimum and maximum temperatures. Significant differences existed between varieties within sowing date and between sowing dates for GY and yield components. Significant correlation coefficients were found between GY, kernels/head, days to heading, mean minimum temperature and the difference between mean maximum and minimum temperatures of the 15 days prior to heading for early material, and seeding dates. It is deduced that low temperatures are the main limiting factor to high yield in this region. This suggests that the ongoing selection program should incorporate frost tolerance into future varieties and select material with slow primordia initiation and rapid primordia development
